Jews Don’t Feel Pain

Three of the Jewish political prisoners have recently made the headlines. Jonathan Pollard – who is serving a life sentence in the U.S.A. for spying for Israel and has already sat in jail for almost ten years. Ron Arad -captured by the Iranians and their Palestinian organization allies nine years ago. David Ben Shimol, who was released after twelve years in Israeli prison for avenging the spilled blood of Jews, and he represents the twenty Jewish political prisoners languishing today in Israeli jails for their acts of vengeance.

And lo and behold, despite the Israeli government’s attempts to give off the impression that the prisoners held by the goyim such as Ron Arad and Jonathan Pollard are at the top of their agenda (while the political prisoners in Israel are “racist” and “criminal”), once again their treachery is exposed. Within a week, the Minister of Interior refused to grant Pollard Israeli citizenship, and the Israeli government was able to “squeeze out” of the Iranian stolen plane crisis without really taking advantage of the opportunity to do something for Ron Arad.

Why do we keep getting that feeling that this government will not do anything for a Jew if they think it will damage their ties with America or their world image as a “normal” country. BUT ISRAEL HAS NO RIGHT TO EXIST IF IT DOES NOT FULFILL IT’S ROLE OF BEING A GUARDIAN FOR ALL OF WORLD JEWRY – AND CERTAINLY FOR THOSE WHO ACTED IN HER BEHALF. But the leaders of this country have proved long ago that neither Jews nor Judaism interest them -only the Knesset seat.

Outrageous! Notice how the Arabs feel the urgency for their prisoners! But our political prisoners are treated like some burden that we must carry onour backs. Let it be known that the struggle against this evil regime will not succeed if we ignore the principles of mutual guaranteeism of one Jew for another – that is, we cannot separate the struggle against this government from the struggle to release the Jewish political prisoners.

Rosh Hashanah: What Kind of “Tsh’uva” Do We Need?

Every schoolboy knows that Rosh Hashana is the time for us to do “Tshuva”. Yeshiva halls are bursting with such talk, and in the month of “Elul”, all religious newspapers have the concept of “Tshuva” plastered all over their pages. Every rabbi knows that “Elul” is the time to tell his congregation to do serious soul searching and find their way to G-d. Generally speaking, the concept of “Tshuva” is one of the few things that everyone agrees upon. And so, “Baal Tshuva” Yeshivas are in abundance, and the concept of “bringing someone to Tshuva” is accepted by all.

The question that arises is the following: If the Jewish nation is so involved in “Tshuva”, why is the Jewish State in the worst situation it has ever been in spiritually, socially and from the point of view of security? The answer is the following: Obviously the “Tshuva” we see today is a positive thing that must be encouraged, but it is far from adequate. We must strive for a different KIND of “tshuva” – one that is much more comprehensive and far reaching.

The time has arrived for us to be outraged at the cheapening of Jewish blood in the Jewish State. The time has come for us to open our eyes to the national disaster that hovers over the Jewish State and World Jewry as well, and to escape from the apathy of our tiny lives and the mud we are mired in. Anyone who has read the words of Rabbi Kahane, HY”D, concerning the period we live in today, cannot possibly remain indifferent. He stressed, especially before his death, the vicious hate and the awesome tragedies which will be unleashed against the Jewish People before the final redemption in the form of what the sages call “Bi-Eta” – the redemption that comes slowly at its fixed time.

This entire nightmare will befall us if we don’t wake up and “DO TSHUVA”!! We’re not talking here just about a “tshuva” of “Shabbos” and “tefilin”, but rather one of deeds that express genuine “Bitachon” in Hashem – acts of Kiddush Hashem that will change the slow, painful redemption to a speedy and glorious one. We must have enough faith in G-d to do those “painful” and “difficult” tasks that Jews of old considered “normal”. It is time for us to realize how terrible it is when Jews are murdered, and how much worse it is when the ones lucky enough to still be alive are too apathetic or fearful of the gentile or leftist reaction to do something about it. We must realize what “Tshuva” is in a broader sense. It is expressed in the belief that the Jewish G-d is stronger and more powerful than anything imaginable (even Bill Clinton!). It means not abandoning Jonathan Pollard and the rest of the Jewish political prisoners even though that is what the “boss” in the White House wants. Yes, a sweeping and global “tshuva” that transcends the personal “Mitzvot”, and expresses genuine belief in G-d’s Omnipotence.

G-d gives us a length of time to avoid catastrophe but this period has also come to an end. The time for “Tshuva” has arrived. May we merit to understand the type of “Tshuva” that is required of us, and to bring the redemption swiftly and gloriously without needless suffering.

Vayigash: Do Not Stand by Your Brothers Blood

From the first two words in our parasha, “Vayigash Yehuda”, meaning “and Yehuda approached” the sages teach us that the encounter between Yehuda and Yosef was a hostile one.

Yosef had seized Binyamin and said, “Leave him here as my slave, and you may return in peace to your father’s house !” Yehuda responded, however, “Do you think that there will be peace in our father’s house if we return without Binyamin?” (Breishit Raba, 93:7). Yehuda at this point was prepared to even give up his own life for Binyamin. The midrashim expound on the fierce confrontation that ensued, where the brothers were even prepared to destroy Egypt if Yosef refused to release Binyamin.

We learn from the brothers action that there is no limit to the lengths to which a Jew must go when necessary to aid a fellow Jew. He must be prepared to give his efforts; he must be prepared to give his moneys and if need be he must be prepared to give more. Ahavat Yisrael means feeling the pain of the Jew who is suffering. It means that if Jonathan Pollard is sitting in jail, we cannot sleep nights. It means caring for the Jewish prisoners of Zion in Zion.

Seven months ago, three young men from the settlement of Bat Ayin were arrested on suspicion that they were planning to bomb an Arab school. In a previous parsha sheet, we brought the letter of Etti Dvir, the wife of one of the prisoners, who was tortured while under investigation by the Israeli authorities. For six months now, the Bay Ayin “underground” has been sitting in Ayalon Prison. They have been deprived of basic rights that any other prisoner enjoys, such as restrictions on who may visit them. On the weekly visits allowed to all prisoners, they can only be visited by a first relative (wife, mother, father, sister or brother). No friends, no uncles, no grandparents. In addition, during these visits, they are forbidden to touch their children the entire visit is through a glass window! They are also deprived from a monthly visit from a rabbi, which every other prisoner is entitled to. They cannot receive mail, and their every move is under surveillance: five cameras film them inside their cells, depriving them of any privacy whatsoever.

It is obscene that such methods are used against Jews who are not the enemies of the State of Israel. Nothing could more graphically underline the gentilization of the Jewish State, than to see the callousness by the Shin Bet people to fellow Jews, which is derived from their total lack of Jewishness of soul.
