An Interview From Ma’asiyahu Prison

Question: Why did they put you in jail?
Answer: There are two different charges here. One is the planning and carrying out of a “pogrom” (!) in an Arab village. The other, which is much more serious, is sedition.

Question: What does that mean, “sedition”?
Answer: Without getting into the details of the case, it must be known that the leadership in Israel fears us not because of one action or another, but rather because of the words which we speak. They are well aware of how the hearts of the people are receptive to our message, which only we say. But since they are not capable of dealing with us on an intellectual basis, they have tried over the years to silence us in every way possible. Now they have tried to use a piece of legislation from the old British rule which is called “sedition”, which in essence gives freedom of action against anyone they don’t like. This is how I “merited” to be the first Jew in the history of Israel who has been convicted of this charge.

Question: I understand that your father, HY”D, was also charged with sedition.
Answer: And it never even got to court. That was in the 70’s, and the government knew that continuing on such a course could boomerang against them.

Question: But against you they didn’t change their minds?
Answer: On the contrary! Despite the fact that I was acquitted at the beginning, the state insisted on appealing the decision, and they finally got the conviction they wanted. The thing is this: There is no doubt that in recent years, (way before the left rose), the trend has been to silence those belonging to what they term the “extreme right”. The political establishment reached the conclusion that the real threat does not come from the Arabs, but rather from the Jews who cling to Jewish and Zionist ideology.

Question: What do you think one must do in such a situation?
Answer: To continue to circulate the Jewish idea non-stop. I believe this is our most urgent mission. The weapon of words, no one can take from us! This is what the government fears.

Question: Is it worth the price?
Answer: That can’t even be a question. Saying the truth is a very part of us. And if the price is prison, then so be it!

Question: Doesn’t the changing of governments have any influence in this area?
Answer: You have to understand that there is a Hellenist control over the two major functionaries in this country – the judiciary and the media. And they have a clear goal: Hellenism! Only a strong and decisive government who has a clear and definite direction can change this. The present governmentis just like the last Likud government – it is weak and confused, and so it is irrelevant. The real government today in Israel is the leftist and dictatorial judiciary with its media backing, which is leading the Hellenist war against Jews and Judaism.

Question: Do you have any more trials?
Answer: Yes. The truth is that the real trial will take place very soon – onRosh Hashana. I want to tell you that exactly a year ago, four days before Rosh Hashana, they were supposed to sentence us. I prepared a little”speech”. I wanted to say to the judge that in four more days we will allstand before a real High Court, and I hope THAT THERE, we, the ones “on trial”, will be able to give an answer to the question regarding what did we do to prevent the situation where Jews are blown up on buses in their owncountry. In short, I said one sentence, and the judge cut me off saying, “I won’t let you turn the court into a media stage”, despite the fact that at the time there was not one journalist in the entire room..but the judge simply was not capable of hearing such words.

Question: How is life and how are the conditions in prison?
Answer: Look, prison can be a beneficial period in a man’s life if he takes advantage of it. In essence, you are given what you need, and you can’t leave the place. In short, the conditions are ideal for learning, for thinking, for introspection, and for strengthening oneself for the future. For one who can take advantage of the time and not waste it, jail can be a prize instead of a punishment. Not that it isn’t difficult. But who said it was easy to be a Jew?

Question: How long will this harassment keep up?
Answer: Let me tell you a personal thought that came into my head when I entered the prison. I remembered that exactly 17 years ago, my father, HY”D entered prison Ma’asiyahu, where I am now. The memory remains clear, because exactly then I was celebrating my Bar-Mitzvah, and the army commander in Judea and Samaria then was “Fuad” Ben Eliezer, who had the authority at the time to make all kinds of decisions. He gave my father a real hard time about letting him out for my Bar Mitzvah. At the time, “Fuad”proposed to my father that he would cancel his prison sentence on the condition that he would stop making “problems”. Obviously, my father rejected this “proposal”. What I want to say is that one can get depressed when after so many years nothing seems to change. But the truth is that at least from the point of view of the idea that has been penetrated amongst the Israeli public, a great deal has changed. We are getting very close to finally deciding in the struggle between Judaism and Hellenism. We are much closer than we think.

Torah In The Interrogation Room

A few important lessons can be learned from the following story.

Following the Yohrzeit of the murder of Baruch Goldstein, HY”D, orders were given by the authorities to “take care” of those who praised Baruch Goldstein or wrote articles in the memorial book, “Baruch HaGever”. Since according to police records I fell into both of the above categories, it was only a matter of time before I would be called upon by the police. And indeed, after searching for me for some time, I was brought to the local precinct and investigated.

Apparently, during their efforts to search me down, a large number of charges piled up on their desk. And so the interrogator sat across from me, pulling out one file after another. One on a rally we had in Jerusalem, another concerning a restriction order prohibiting me from entering Hebron, Shchem, and Jericho. The fascinating part is that until now, they had been “unable” to inform me about these restriction orders, and now, two weeks before their validity date expired, they took the opportunity to give them to me. Then we finally got to the main event: “You are charged with expressing praise for Baruch Goldstein during an Israeli television interview by saying that he is a symbol for the people. What is your reaction?” I answered him that the subject is a halachic one, and thereforeI didn’t think that the police have much knowledge in this field, and were thus incapable of properly passing judgment over me. The investigator listened, wrote it down, and continued onward.

Next charge – the publication of an article in the book, “Baruch HaGever”. Iwas surprised. The list of “crimes” would make any criminal proud. Incitement to racism, supporting a terror organization, encouraging acts ofviolence, and last but not least – contempt of court. “Contempt of court?”, I thought to myself. What is THAT?? Only then did I remember that in the article, the Israeli court system was harshly criticized. The juiciest part, I remembered, were the words of Rabeinu Bechayei on the strict prohibition to appear before courts that carry out gentile law. I thought of how interesting it would be to be grilled together with Rabeinu Bechayei.

I declared before the interrogator that I cannot cooperate with this investigation, since to the best of my knowledge, the Israeli police do not possess the necessary means to carry out justice in such a case since thearticle I wrote is based on the Jewish “halacha”, and thus there is nothing to talk about. The interrogator insisted: “But what do you YOURSELF say about the article you wrote?” I answered him with a question: “You are investigating me on a specific article. Tell me – are you familiar with the investigation material? Did you even read the article?” He was openly embarrassed, and quickly wrapped up the interrogation. After all, he is trained to conduct investigations dealing with drugs and prostitution. Whenwas the last time he had to probe quotes from Rabeinu Bechayei?

Before leaving the station, I talked with some of the policemen. One of them mentioned the book “Baruch HaGever”, and I immediately asked him, “Nu, Baruch isn’t a gever?” He answered me with a grin, “You’re trying to get me into trouble; I say Baruch is a gever and then they’ll start investigating ME about supporting a terrorist organization…” Another younger and less experienced cop spontaneously expressed his admiration for Baruch Goldstein, and spoke of Ami Popper. I can only wish that young police officer that he was not somehow being recorded. After all, anything can happen in the democratic state in which we live..

Prisoner Exchange

The return of the bodies of the soldiers Yosef Fink and Rachamim Elshich, May G-d Avenge their Blood, after the mental torture that their families endured – was looked upon as a great “achievement” for us. Experts were quick to talk about “breakthroughs” in relations with the Hizbollah. And so the main point was forgotten: The two soldiers were murdered in cold blood by their captors!! And not one of us is shocked in the least. We take this lowly behavior of the Arab as something for granted. Where is the justice that the State of Israel should be demanding for the blood of her children and soldiers that has been spilled in such a cheap way.

But we have grown used to it all. Arabs act like vulgar wild animals, and we play the gentlemen, obeying the international law to the T.

And we recently saw another example of this sickness. Parallel to the scandalous decision of Weizman and Netanyahu to grant pardons for”Palestinian” terrorist murderers, it was decided that the sentences of some of the Jewish prisoners should be lightened. And the truth was, that just hearing such news warmed the heart for a moment, despite the fact that it was done to legitimize the atrocity of releasing Arab murderers. But the joy was premature. To counter the release of Arab terrorists, it turned out that the following decisions were made: Dani Eizman received 17.5 years, Nir Efroni got 22 years, Alan Goodman 24 years, and Nachshon Walls 15 years. What “balance”! How even handed! And let’s not forget that Yehoram Shkolnick, who was given a life sentence for killing a terrorist, was not even mentioned. This is pure evil! Oy to the nation that pardons its enemies and abandons its lovers!

Update on Political Prisoners

Benyamin Ze’ev Kahane wrote this article in 5756 (1996), fifteen years ago. What has changed? Have the authorities stopped arresting Jews for the crime of teaching Torah that opposes the government and its policies? Tell that to Rabbi Ginsburg, who 15 years after this article was written, has been imprisoned again for writing a well researched and sourced halacha book “Torat HaMelech”, and Rav Dov Lior who was also imprisoned for writing a hakdama (recommendation) for the said sefer. Maybe we should also mention Haim Pearlman, who was sent to prison and possibly tortured for showing the whole nation what a joke Shaba”k really is (the joke’s on them — he was released, and they are still losers). Today there are still many Jews languishing in Israeli prisons for various crimes such as self-defense, ‘sedition’, and incitiment. Think about how you could help these proud and strong Jews in their difficult struggles, today.

There is no more appropriate time than Passover, which is the Holiday of Freedom (“Chag Hacharut”), to mention the 30 political prisoners who languish in Israeli prison AND ARE NOT FREE MEN – because they wanted to see their people free men.

And now, the newest crime at the top of the agenda of the Israeli authorities is the speaking of truth. Binyamin Kahane was sentenced to four months for “rebellion”, and most recently Baruch Merzel was sentenced to three months imprisonment for the uttering of a single word, calling Faisel Husseini (“Ya mach shmo”) a “murderer” in a court room!

And Rabbi Yitzchak Ginzberg Shlita joins the list of rabbis who have been tossed into jail. He joins Rabbi Moshe Levinger Shlita who was sentenced to prison for 7 months for performing a mitzvah, and he also joins Rabbi Ido Elba Shlita who has already sat a year and half in prison for a Torah essay he wrote.

The edicts which the authorities have set down against Torah have become harsher and harsher. For they know that the real danger to their power is the Torah truth which these rabbis are willing to express. But on this Passover Holiday, we come to teach the tyrants a lesson: While you may be able to imprison our bodies, you cannot break our spirit! You will not subdue the truth – you will only sharpen it through your falsehood. For it is the speaking of the Jewish truth which is the front-burner issue in the struggle for redemption today.

Jews Don’t Feel Pain

Three of the Jewish political prisoners have recently made the headlines. Jonathan Pollard – who is serving a life sentence in the U.S.A. for spying for Israel and has already sat in jail for almost ten years. Ron Arad -captured by the Iranians and their Palestinian organization allies nine years ago. David Ben Shimol, who was released after twelve years in Israeli prison for avenging the spilled blood of Jews, and he represents the twenty Jewish political prisoners languishing today in Israeli jails for their acts of vengeance.

And lo and behold, despite the Israeli government’s attempts to give off the impression that the prisoners held by the goyim such as Ron Arad and Jonathan Pollard are at the top of their agenda (while the political prisoners in Israel are “racist” and “criminal”), once again their treachery is exposed. Within a week, the Minister of Interior refused to grant Pollard Israeli citizenship, and the Israeli government was able to “squeeze out” of the Iranian stolen plane crisis without really taking advantage of the opportunity to do something for Ron Arad.

Why do we keep getting that feeling that this government will not do anything for a Jew if they think it will damage their ties with America or their world image as a “normal” country. BUT ISRAEL HAS NO RIGHT TO EXIST IF IT DOES NOT FULFILL IT’S ROLE OF BEING A GUARDIAN FOR ALL OF WORLD JEWRY – AND CERTAINLY FOR THOSE WHO ACTED IN HER BEHALF. But the leaders of this country have proved long ago that neither Jews nor Judaism interest them -only the Knesset seat.

Outrageous! Notice how the Arabs feel the urgency for their prisoners! But our political prisoners are treated like some burden that we must carry onour backs. Let it be known that the struggle against this evil regime will not succeed if we ignore the principles of mutual guaranteeism of one Jew for another – that is, we cannot separate the struggle against this government from the struggle to release the Jewish political prisoners.
